Snapshot of all Things Annelore

1935: Started coming with her family to their home on Myrtle Island in Bluffton as one of the "summer people" from Savannah, Georgia

1937: At age 5, she stopped speaking her first language, German, after being bullied at school.

1944: At age 12, she started driving a car. She still drives while checking the rearview mirror for police.

1970: President of the largest Officer's Wives Club in the world (Ft. Bragg, NC)

1974: She dazzled audiences as Eleanor of Aquitaine in "Lion in Winter," performed in Stuttgart, Germany

Mid-Late '70s: Began real estate career and established Annelore Harrell Realty

1981: Moved to her retirement home on Myrtle Island.

Early '80s: Taught her daughter, Tamela Pinckney (now Tamela Maxim), and other young mothers how to play bridge in her home once a week. A babysitter was hired to watch the children in the guest cottage. Tamela and two other former young mothers still play bridge with Annelore.

1995-1998: She hosted a weekly, live, one-hour show on the Bluffton Broadcasting Channel "BBC."

1998-2022: Annelore was a columnist for the local Bluffton newspaper Carolina Morning News, which later became known as The Bluffton Today

Won 1st Place in her category for Best Column from SC Press Association

2017: Recognized by Mayor Lisa Sulka for writing her 1,000th column, and June 23rd was declared Lala Day.  "Lala" is the affectionate nickname given to her when she became a grandmother in 1982.

2021: Grand Marshal of the Bluffton Christmas Parade

2025: She started writing for The Bluffton Sun and The Hilton Head Sun. At 92, you won't find her sitting still for long, but she does enjoy the occasional nap. She’ll be 93 on August 2nd; 113 Myrtle Island Rd, Bluffton, SC 29910 is the address in case you’d like to send a card.

More about Annelore:

Annelore is a fabulous hostess known to throw together a last-minute meal or event for anywhere from 2 to 200 guests as if it were a “de rien” easy-peasy-anybody-could-pull-it-off thing. Her flower/greenery arrangements at home and as a member of the flower guild at the Church of the Cross are stunning and often unusual. She rocked men's ties long before Diane Keaton made it a trend, and her hats, necklaces, and bracelets are wearable treasures. Annelore is an avid reader (she “cheats” and reads the endings first because she doesn’t like suspense) and will read almost anything but horror or science fiction. She will read the phone book, food container labels, or medical procedure brochures if those are the only written words available while stuck in a line or waiting room. She does not use her cell phone to read and prefers real books with actual paper. Her musical tastes include rock, classical, blues, bluegrass, indie, alternative, R&B, and Gregorian chants. She has a knack for turning life's simplest moments into grand adventures. and her warm, approachable demeanor makes readers feel like she's one of their best friends.

Dive into Annelore Harrell's enchanting world and let her stories captivate your heart! Et Cetera Y’all, Volume 2 will be out sometime this year, so stay tuned!

Sneak Peek

inside Et Cetera Y'all

by Gwyneth Saunders

Before we moved to Bluffton, I wrote for the Maryland Independent, a  Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association member. Journalists, photographers, and others were eligible for association awards each year. In 2006, I won 1st place in the arts and entertainment category and 2nd place in 2007 for a feature story.

After I began working for Bluffton Today, I learned that no one ever put the staff in for awards from the South Carolina Press Association.

I convinced some of my peers to submit stories, but there was no one to advocate for Annelore Harrell and Carolyn Bremer, two local died-in-the-wool long-time residents who provided weekly columns. They’d bring their typed-up stories about the characters, food, traditions, history, and memories of living in Bluffton and bring to life the “Bluffton State of Mind.”

I was enchanted by their tales because they were so easy to read and added valuable insight into Lowcountry life. You can almost taste the food, smell the flowers, and hear people splashing in the May. I gathered a few of their columns and added them to the package we finally sent. Tamela says I paid the entry fees; I don’t remember exactly how much, but trying for a little recognition for these long-time contributors was worth it.

Life went on, the newspaper got delivered each day, and we all forgot, until one day, that is, when a package arrived and inside were awards. We were thrilled for all of the winners, no matter what level, but I think the person most surprised and excited was Annelore, who had no idea there was such a thing for which she might be submitted or even eligible.

I know I have missed a number of her columns because I didn’t get here until 2016. I got here as fast as my husband could hustle us south, so I have some catching up to do.

You might make yourself some sweet tea, pull up a chair on the veranda, and settle in for a spell with Annelore’s Et Cetera Y’all.
